New York State is offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and arrest of Richard Matt and David Sweat. On Sunday, New York Governor Andrew said, “these are dangerous men and are capable of committing grave crimes once again. These are killers. They are murderers. There’s never been a question about the crimes they committed. They are now on the loose, and our first order of business is apprehending them”.

Matt and Sweat, the two convicted murderers who recently escaped from an upstate maximum security prison, used power tools to cut through the steel back walls of their cells, prison walls and pipes.

After cutting through the steel back walls of their cells, they reportedly clambered along a six-foot-high catwalk to access a twisting series of pipes and tunnels, which they also cut their way into. They then made their way through the pipes and climbed up through a manhole onto a nearby street.

Cuomo, who toured the daring route the two prisoners took to freedom, said their path brought to mind “The Shawshank Redemption”, the 1994 adaptation of a Stephen King story about an inmate’s carefully planned escape.

Martin Horn, a former Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and a prison warden in New York state during the 1980s, said many questions still remain. Among these questions are: How long did it take to prepare for the escape? What kinds of tools were used? What powered them? Why did no one hear the noise? How did the prisoners hide the holes they made? Clinton is as secure a prison as you’ll find anywhere in the United States. If it can happen at Clinton, it can happen anywhere,” Horn added.
