It was meant to be a special day, a day to remember. Unfortunately, a young boy named Eli Malone will remember what should have been a joyous birthday celebration as the day he lost his best friend, a dog named Opie.

On Tuesday, Eli, his friends, and his mom were celebrating his birthday when police showed up at the house. Reportedly, the cops were there to serve a warrant to a man who had lived in the house ten years prior – regardless of the fact that they knew the Malones had lived there for the past year. Before they approached the house (and never issued a warrant), a heartbreaking incident took place.

The kids had just gone in the house to receive ice cream when they heard a shot being fired outside. Eli looked out the window and told his mom,

“Mama, something’s wrong with Opie.”

Then, two more gunshots from a high-powered rifle were fired.

When Vickie Malone was questioned by Fox25 News, she said:

“He (Opie) was over here kicking and gasping for air.”

When Malone confronted the officer, she was told that the dog had lunged at him through the fence. The town’s chief of police, Ken Moore, told a similar story, saying that the 3-year-old pit bull mix had shown signs of aggression and charged the officer. However, the chief of police hadn’t seen the footage of the aftermath which  shows the dog lying dead with a gunshot wound to the head inside the fence – at a safe distance from the cop.

Despite the incongruence of facts, Moore maintains that the shooting was justifiable.

“We have a right to defend ourselves so I stand by my officer in the decision that he made,” Moore told News 9.

To Eli, the shooting of his dog is incomprehensible. He explained to the press that Opie was his best friend, and that “I would have fun with him when he runned around and we played tag.”

His mother’s opinion of police seems to have changed in result of the incident. She stated:

I respect what the police do, but this was senseless, but he didn’t show any remorse and didn’t even act like he was sorry or anything.”

  1. You would think that after 10 years had gone by the would have done some fact checking.

They were just plain wrong. They murdered that dog for no reason.

  2. Are you kidding me comma it’s instinctive for a dog to protect its territory and its owners the officers knew they were at the wrong house on private property and the dog was behind a fence everything about this is wrong the police are wrong and need to be held accountable I am so Furious

  3. I hope the cop get banned and killed… He will definetly get nothing. It sounds everytime like police officers in America can just shoot like they want to, if they say they done ir because “Vogel” it’s reasonsble enough.

  4. KILL HIM! KILL THE POLICE OFFICER! KILL HIM! BRUTALLY! SHOOT HIM IN THE BALLS AND IN THE STOMACH AND THE OTHER LUNG AND LEAVE HIM ALONE GASPING FOR AIR!!!

  5. The despicable actions of THIS ONE low down police officer does not represent all police officers just like the actions of one civilian doesn’t represent all of us?! Well how unfair it would be to be judged by just Ted Bundy, or Loraine Warnos, That would be SO far from the truth! The cops shot that poor?Dog for the EXACT same reason …Some pit bulls are known to be aggressive/mean fighting dogs, they all bite, they were bred to kill!!! COME ON people STOP judging AT ALL but at least stop putting people/animals whatever in a damn boxed up category…NOT all pit bulls are aggressive, I have seen some gentle as can be, protective of little ones and a lot less aggressive then those little ankle biting dogs that bark all time. This woman should PRESS CHARGES on that heartless, suppose to be cop that shot a dog inside a fence? Shew I’m tellin ya if they pulled that kinda crap here in Kentucky, hillbilly town lol, that dog wouldn’t be the only thing shot…that old pig woulda had one less knee cap when he left!!!!

  6. Give the cop, who’d shot and kill the dog, the same treatment…
You can say the same thing what he said…
“He looked and came aggressive to me”.

  7. So if I’m approaching an officers house and they have a police dog inside of a fenced yard that is barking and acting in an aggressive manner, I can shoot it right? Cops can’t tell me no, this right here is them saying that it is, apparently, a justifiable action….

    Fucking asshole pigs.
Not all of them, mind you, you have plenty of men and women in the force who are honest good police officers, and them you have people like the officers in this story who are little more then pigs.

  8. I don’t live in the f*cked up U.S but if a piece of shit cop did that to my dog who was clearly behind a fence on my private property I would string him up and test out some of my creative Saw (jigsaw) traps on a motherf*cker.

  9. From this and more other cases involving dogs ”attacking” police officers we see they are careless cowards(Not every cop)…

  10. And some cops want respect these days, they’re not all bad, but this doesn’t help. That poor boy, I had an officer threaten to shoot mine once, so this isn’t uncommon, the same reason, the officer controlled by his own arrogance and I was just a guy taking his dog for a walk. Hang in there Son, this society will grow up someday, but the harsh lesson you learned, well know it never had to be taught to you.

  11. There needs to be MUCH more training with officers and pet confrontations. They appear to lack any sort of understanding of when they’re at a level of threat that warrants shooting the animal. Moore is just as unfamiliar with this distinction obviously as well if he stands behind the officers actions for such a situation.

Maybe involve a fence in the training courses so they can remember what the purpose of a fence is in the first place again.

  12. This is disgusting. The policeman that took the shot should have been arrested and charged. If a member of the public shot a dog then we would be made to appear in a law court.
