Syrian Girls Are The Refugees of Today, But Aspire To Be The Leaders of Tomorrow

The civil war in Syria has raged for years. More than 200,000 have died since 2011 and has given the world no shortage of horrifying images of bloody violence. In that time, child refugees have been searching for hope—and some of them are finding it in an inspiring project launched by the International Rescue Committee.

The above video from the aid group’s project, dubbed Vision Not Victim, offer an empowering glimpse of a new sense of hope in the region, inspired by the refugee girls and their dreams. The program first visited eastern Congo to talk to refugee girls last year. This year it visited the Zaatari Refugee Camp in Jordan, which houses 82,107 refugees, half of whom are women.

The program invited successful local women to mentor 30 refugee girls ages 11 to 16,. These women would share their own experiences about navigating obstacles and achieving their dreams, hopefully inspiring the girls in the process. The careers chosen by the refugee girls in the video reflect the chaos and instability they had experienced in Syria: lawyer, policewoman, pharmacist, and doctor are roles that would bring order, peace, and progress to their community.

“I chose law because I want the innocent to have the justice they deserve,” says 16-year-old Nour.

Since the start of the war, 3 million people have fled the country. Of those, four out of five are women and children.Source: Take Part
