A Texas women, Nicole Guerrero, was being held in solitary confinement for drug possession charges back in summer 2012. Guerrero was in need of assistance, she was about to give birth.
As bad as being stuck in an isolated sell from dusk till dawn and vice versa may sound horrible, for this woman, her pregnant state made matters even worse.
Guerrero was forced to give birth mostly alone in her cell, Guerrero was denied any sort of medical assistance aswell as being denied authority to go to the hospital. This resulted in her newborn baby’s death. The warden and prison guards were well informed that the woman was pregnant and was supposed to be treated by a doctor assigned to her, however, she was still kept in confinement thanks to a nurse telling her she was not in labor, when she was. She began her suffering, followed up by screaming, and then finally giving birth.
Nicole Guerrero is now placing a federal lawsuit against the authorities for not assisting her and clearly ignoring the fact that she was in labor. According to the lawsuit filed that she filled in, Guerrero states that “Wichita County denied her access to reasonable medical care … ignored her obvious signs of labor and constant requests for medical assistance, failed to conduct a physical examination …when she began to display obvious signs of labor, left her unattended in a solitary cell while she was obviously in labor, failed to transport her to the hospital for safe delivery, which ultimately caused her to deliver her baby alone in the solitary cell, and resulted in her suffering severe and likely permanent, physical and psychological injuries”. the lawsuit also stated that the she was deprived of access to reasonable medical care, violating the 14th Amendment.
The Wichita County is currently refusing to comment on the case, explaining that they are “prohibited from talking about pending litigation in Texas because we are representing the county in this case”. – mintpressnews.com
Near to the end of her delivery, a detention officer walking past decided that her cries for help where real and went in to assist her in delivering the baby, however due to no help coming sooner, the umbilical cord had been wrapped around the baby’s neck.
CPR was performed on the baby but it was too late.
