Russell Brand Rants: Why Is Feeding The Homeless Illegal In America?

10

The arrest of 90-year-old World War II veteran Arnold Abbott, for violating Fort Lauderdale’s new ordinance that bans feeding homeless people, has upset actor Russell Brand.

Brand says sharing is one of the most important Christian values. Looking after each other is a Christian value. But, according to him, American businessmen use Christianity and morality of all kind to protect their own corporate interests.

“This is a very popular current mentality, and presumably it comes from businesses and corporations in town centers saying, ‘I don’t like these homeless folk outside my store, it’s inconvenient and depressing. Don’t feel sympathy for the vulnerable people; think about local businesses and their needs not to have human litter cluttering up the walkways”. At no point do people think, ‘We can divert some of this wealth and affluence at the top of the pyramid towards vulnerable people’… And of course we all know homelessness can’t be ended… homelessness could be ended with the money Americans spend on Christmas decorations,” he commented.

“America just had midterm elections where $4 billion was spent on campaigning — which is just telling you that something’s good. But feeding the homeless? That’s illegal,” he concluded.

  1. Lol funny how you think its cool to sell them a dollar but i dont think it is,what we should do is get rid of those types of shelters that wanna charge them for the night i met some of them that were charged $12 or more a night its crazy not to mention that some may be in that Situation because theu got away with their lives others really hope it was and wish they werent in that situation but they do what it takes to survive others were illegaly thrown out their homes and yes some are involved in doing drugs but Mr. Brand is right we spend more money on ornaments. We could help lots by opening up shelters that dont charge them for staying there but tests them for drug and alcohol use and provide help to those who have that problem to get out of it and create programs to help them that actually work. Not th unemployment office type which only make you go around in circles and look for work waste a whole day and come up empty cause that place is not even hiring. We need to get together and help each other reguardless of anything because remember the last time you had a bad situation in your life you felt bad and in danger remeber how you felt when a friend or afamily member showed up to help you how happy and so full of hope you were, i was in a situation where the tornado siren sounded and my apartment was blocks away all stores were closed and it was probable a tornado was comming i called my mom she said she was sleeping so i called a neighbor and he saved my life after i could have been gone the last four times one tornado could take my life in that morning since 4am that morning. The point is to give hope and help each other because without it we would not exist today.

    • No, it’s not selling them a dollar. It’s giving them a dollar then having them give the dollar back to you. that way it’s not a ‘free meal’. crazy, it shouldn’t be illegal to help someone.

  2. Id deeding the homeless is against the law, then feeding them shall be a form of “civil disobedience” that any human being, of any political or religious (or non-religious) group, should embrace. If a law/ordinance is passed that denies the basic rights of individuals to EAT, it is the humanitarian obligation of every human being to disobey that law. Otherwise, apathy wins…and some day it may be you, or your family member, on those streets. My own brother was homeless after returning from Vietnam, and every time I meet a homeless person I think, I will care for him, as I hope others are caring for my brother.” Don’t sell your heart, soul and mind to the politician machine that would own us…fight back!

  3. they a can come take me away for helping someone who needs it…I let homeless stay at my house….and I have kids..it isn’t much but it is something….so if they want to come take me way then they better put me down…there will be a fight…

    • are you kidding? that’s HUGE. I’ve lived outside at various times in my life, and even my own family left me out there to freeze. Your taking homeless people in is amazing. Thank you!

  4. I, agree with you, No Name. They could torture me, throw me in jail, whatever they wanted to do to me. I would walk out one day with a smile and feed the first homeless person I seen! So many things in this world are so wrong. What is going on with people. Have they lost their minds…greed is the root of it, I hold firm on that. Take away their power and money and they are nothing more than scared little trolls and bullies. And we all know what to do with a bully. 😉
