Apple’s actions in resisting the government in the interest of user information security have not gone unnoticed (though this is the same company which intentionally bricked iPhones that were repaired by third parties for the exact same stated reasons); activists from around the world have decided to organize rallies on Tuesday Feb the 23rd at 5:30 pm local time at Apple stores in Hong Kong, Munich, London, and several US cities such as Anchorage, San Diego, New York, and Minneapolis.
Fight for the Future organised one such rally last Tuesday at Stockton Street in San Francisco, and it is now attempting to organize rallies in other parts of the world.
Tim Cook, Apple CEO, has stood against the FBI’s demands that he create a customized iOS firmware which would allow law enforcement access to the iPhone belonging to the San Bernardino terrorist. A court order could force Apple’s hand.
Tim Cook in a memo to employees, regarding their and the general public’s support:
“We all know that turning back the clock on that progress would be a terrible idea.
Our fellow citizens know it, too. Over the past week I’ve received messages from thousands of people in all 50 states, and the overwhelming majority are writing to voice their strong support. One email was from a 13-year-old app developer who thanked us for standing up for “all future generations.” And a 30-year Army veteran told me, “Like my freedom, I will always consider my privacy as a treasure.”
I’ve also heard from many of you and I am especially grateful for your support.”
