On His Way To Swim, Heroic Teen Rescues 20 Hikers

Sonny Boiser, a 15-year-old Wailua Homesteads resident, on his way to a swimming hole near the Hawaiian Island of Kauai’s Blue Hole hiking trail, rescued 20 hikers with his heroic act. According to The Huffington Post, Sonny was driving down Kuamoo Road on August 2, for an evening swim in a water hole along the hiking trail to Waialeale Crater on the Eastside, located in the second-rainiest spot on Earth, when he heard voices screaming for help.

He was shocked to see more than 20 hikers stuck on the wrong side of a stream flooded with raging water. He drove his car to the edge of the stream, tied a rope to the front of the vehicle and threw the other end across the water, where one of the stranded hikers grabbed it and fastened it to a tree. When the stream calmed down, all of the hikers made it safely to the trail head.

16-year-old Micah Phillips-Lam and his friends were on their way back from a seven-hour hike to the Blue Hole when the light, intermittent rain they experienced earlier turned into a heavy downpour. By the time they reached the streams, they found that a flash flood had overtaken them. The hikers were forced to walk through thick jungle to avoid getting drowned. In the woods they met another group of lost hikers looking for a way out. They eventually found the final stream that led to the trail head but they still had to wait for the water to recede.

“We couldn’t cross the river even if we tried to. When we got there, my friend tried to swim across and he almost got swept away, so we didn’t try again. It was raining and we were all cold, the whole group of us, and we just waited. We didn’t know what to do, honestly,” Phillips-Lam said. “That’s when Sonny arrived “out of nowhere. You should’ve seen the look on his face [when he saw us]. We got so lucky he was there. We would have been stranded.”
