Leonardo DiCaprio has announced his second personal donation of $15 million to fast-track sustainability and conservation projects around the world. The announcement came from the Hollywood actor during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland.
DiCaprio has hit the environmental world stage more than the acting stage in the last few years with documentaries, donations and speeches to the UN, and other forums. His announcement of funding grants has followed his latest endeavor of filming a new documentary on climate crisis and maintaining a natural balance with our planet.
DiCaprio gave an acceptance speech while accepting his Crystal Award, a recognition to leading artists for their contributions to better the world. “We simply cannot afford to allow the corporate greed of the coal, oil and gas industries to determine the future of humanity. Those entities with a financial interest in preserving this destructive system have denied—and even covered-up—the evidence of our changing climate. Enough is enough. You know better. The world knows better. History will place the blame for this devastation squarely at their feet.”
It follows his speech made with his recent acceptance of his Golden Globe, speaking out with more warnings, and acknowledging the global indigenous communities that have suffered at the hands of corporate interests.
The donations will be split between several organizations: Oceana and Skytruth for Global Fishing Watch will receive $6 million; Rainforest Action Network and Haka with receive $3.2 million; Clearwater and the Ceibo Alliance in South America will receive $3.4 million, $1.5 million to the Solutions Project; $1 million to Nature Conservancy.
