It took 2,472 women and girls from 14 countries — the youngest 8 and the oldest 85 from the USA, the Gulf, Europe, and Australia — six months to weave an 11,148.5-square-metre bedspread — from 8,034 blankets to break the Guinness World Record for the largest crochet blanket on January 31. It was about the size of one-and-a-half football fields.
The incredible feat, achieved in Chennai, India, by the Facebook group Mother India’s Crochet Queens, beat the previous record held by a South African group that made a 3,377-square-metre blanket. The gigantic blanket was later taken apart and donated to thousands of poor and needy families.
“Our ultimate goal of our mission to donate to NGOs has been fulfilled with the help of our Tamilnadu police department. We have donated all our 8,034 blankets to needy people,” Subashri Natarajan, project coordinator, wrote in a Facebook post.
Natarajan told Mashable that the project was a beautiful combination of social media and the old world charm of crochet.
“When you put your effort into hand-made things, you feel a sense of pride that you are the creator. Yet, it’s only because of technology that we were able to know each other and so many people joined the project.”
