Anonymous Hold Protest At BBC London HQ

A large number of Anonymous protesters, wearing their famous Guy Fawkes masks, gathered outside the BBC headquarters in London on December 23 to condemn the tax-payer funded broadcaster for its biased reporting, and for giving shelter to alleged paedophile Jimmy Savile, a former BBC DJ.

The protesters, outnumbered by reporters and police, shouted “Shame on you!” and “Stop lying!” One protester held a placard that read “BBC – British Bulls***ting Corporation”.

In a video released by Anonymous, the group also accused the BBC of failing to report important news, fabricating information and a tendency to totally avoid telling the truth at times. It continued to blame the BBC of hiding “paedophiles in your midst when [their] staff knew about the abuse of children”, arguing there were “many more” still at large.  The Anonymous spokesperson at one point says, “The BBC takes taxpayers’ money and uses it as their own. The government appears to tell you what to report or not and this year has seen many stories go unreported or twisted to a government viewpoint.”

Jimmy Savile was BBC’s star DJ and TV Presenter from the 1960s to the 2000s. After his death in 2011, hundreds of allegations of sexual abuse were made against him. The police believed that he was a predatory sex offender, and may have been one of Britain’s most prolific sexual offenders.

Metropolitan Police Service launched Operation Yewtree in 2012 to investigate the allegations, primarily the abuse of children. Operation Yewtree targeted high-profile celebrities but Anonymous believe that the most powerful predators were spared.

Critics, nevertheless, believe that Anonymous is resentful of the BBC for deliberately not covering the group’s Million Mask March on November 5. Anonymous protesters, including supporters of anti-capitalist, anti-war and pro-Palestine movements, gathered in London’s Parliament Square and later moved to Buckingham Palace and the BBC’s central London studios.
