On January 11, when more than 40 world leaders and three million people marched in solidarity at a unity rally in Paris to commemorate the victims of Charlie Hebdo attacks, a Hindu father and son duo were threatened and booted out of an Arkansas ‘Muslim-free’ firing range.
The duo, who went to The Gun Cave Indoor Firing Range in Hot Springs for a round of target practice, were Hindu but firing range owner, Jan Morgan, kicked them out anyway. The boy was actually born in America and lived in Hot Springs for ten years before going to an Arkansas college. “My dad and I used to go to this gun range but we haven’t had as much of a chance to go in recent years since I’ve been at college. It’s changed ownership recently,” he said.
“When we went in, a woman asked, ‘Where are you guys from?’ We told her we were from Hot Springs. She said, ‘This is a Muslim-free shooting range,’ so if we are [Muslim] and if we don’t like the rule, then leave. We said that we’re not Muslim, but my dad asked, ‘Why is it Muslim-free?’ and they started having a conversation. Then, all of a sudden, I don’t know what went wrong, but she stopped us from filling out the paperwork and said ‘I don’t think you guys should be here.’ She told us to leave or she’d call the cops on us,” he narrated the incident.
“We’re brown; I don’t know if she assumed we were Muslim,” he continued, “When she first asked us, she said, ‘I would hope if you were Muslim you guys wouldn’t be cowards and would be up front about it’.”
Jan Morgan gave some weird reasons to defend her decision:
“Two men walked in to my range last week with Allah Akbar ring tone and message alert tones on their smart phones. They spoke very little English, one did not have proof of US citizenship, yet they wanted to rent and shoot guns. They were constantly glancing toward the cameras in the range, then looking at each other and speaking in their own language. Their behavior was so strange, it frightened my patrons. No one would enter the range to shoot while they were there. Some of my customers left. I lost business and the people who remained at my facility said they did so out of fear for my safety.”

And these are some of her super-weird reasons to make the range a Muslim-free Zone:
“The Koran (which I have read and studied thoroughly and which Muslims align themselves with), contains 109 verses commanding hate, murder and terror against all human beings who refuse to submit or convert to Islam. My life has been threatened repeatedly by Muslims in response to my publication of those verses from their Koran. Why would I want to rent or sell a gun and hand ammunition to someone who aligns himself with a religion that commands him to kill me?
I understand that not all Muslims are terrorists. I also believe there are as many Muslims who do not know what is in their Koran as there are Christians who do not know what is in their Bible. However, I hold adults accountable for the religion or organizations they align themselves with.
Since I have no way of discerning which Muslims will or will not kill in the name of their religion and the commands in their Koran, I choose to err on the side of caution for the safety of my patrons, just as I would anyone else who aligns himself with an organization that commands him to commit crimes against innocent people.”
The Gun Cave issued a response on January 13 after it faced criticism for racial discrimination at its facility:
“We don’t discriminate against people based on their skin color. We do however, refuse to allow people to shoot here who display behavior that is irrational or might indicate they are under the influence of alcohol or mind altering drugs. We are dealing in lethal weapons here. I turn anyone away that I feel presents a safety and security risk to other patrons.” The Facebook post was accompanied with photographs of ‘Indian/Hindu shooters/members’.

This woman has guts… sure… but she made a dumb mistake and a very rash and rather uneducated decision based on no particular evidence (or rather on the fact that they weren’t of the same ethnicity and they were dark-skinned) that the father and son are Muslims. “the person doesn’t look like me and is dark-skinned so therefore he/she is a Muslim?” It’s not sound logic.
The man simply asked why Muslims are not allowed to shoot there. She reacted by kicking them out instead of effectively explaining her viewpoints. And then she did what an immature person would do and posted it on social media instead of having a real human dialogue with those people.
There was nothing really to defend in that situation. There was no particular threat to her life nor anyone else’s. She was merely projecting her fear onto the Hindu father and son. Projecting your fears without the willingness to understand what you are so afraid of is cowardice. The perceived “threat” was all in her head. And yes… she was being racist because this is how racists think. Very simple and very black-and-white sort of mentality.
Most of the people in this world are brown or dark-skinned. I believe this women has the idea in her head that all the dark-skinned people she sees are Muslim. Then would you label most of the people in the world as Muslims? If anyone could convey a thought that was well structured and not full of cussing or accusations then there would be meaningful discussion about this topic. Just swearing, pointing the finger, and ridiculing each other is basically pointless. Maybe she was afraid, maybe she is just racists. Tensions are very high and there is a lot of fear and uncertainty in the world today. The right to allow who she wants into her establishment is her right. Whether her decision is right or wrong isn’t for me to decide. It is HER right. Just as you have the right to voice your opinions and statements. If I agree or disagree with you isn’t the point. It is YOUR right to do so.
Theres not always an easy answer. If you have a place that people go to to buy/rent/use things and your afraid of what might happen if someone pulls a weapon out and your answer is to deny a certain religion/Race (or anything like that) to go to your place you made so people can buy/rent/use then your an idiot. you did not solve your problem and your safety has not been solved. As she said at the start of this, its not a donut shop, its a gun range with live ammo in the hands of various strangers with various levels of training. Being extremely cautious, and given her beliefs in this case, IS HER DUTY. She can and should decline anyone she chooses in the name of safety. If you dont like the show turn the channel, there are 1000s of ranges out there. Hell, start your own and make it Muslim Only if thats how you feel about it. Free country!
