Payback Time: Holocaust Survivor Finances Rescue Of Syrian Refugees From Islamic State Brutalities

In the face of the Paris Attack claimed by Islamic State or Daesh as the group is known in Arabic, refugees trying to escape the war theatres in the Middle East especially Syria, have been treated with fear and contempt.

Many right-wing politicians in the West have even called for a complete ban on receiving refugees due to fear of Daesh infiltrating them, and later carrying out attacks against citizens. In the United States for example, the Republican Party candidate hopeful, Donald Trump has taken an entrenched position on accepting refugees in the country. He has clearly showed proto-fascist characteristics, whipping up a frenzy of fear and suspicion regarding incoming refugees, especially those from Syria.

But as people like Trump are singing no welcome tunes to refugees, others are also showing true love and compassion.

A Holocaust survivor, Lord George Weidenfeld is currently funding the rescue of some 2,000 Christian refugees from Daesh-held territories in Syria and Iraq.

Lord Weidenfeld is said to have been smuggled out of Nazi-controlled Austria to England in 1938, one year before the outbreak of the Second World War in which Adolf Hitler murdered many Jews. He was saved by a network of religious organizations who recognized the warning signs, and were secretly shipping Jewish children out of Nazi-controlled territories in Europe. At that time, Lord Weidenfeld was five years old. He then grew up in England, and has now become a distinguish publisher across the United Kingdom.

Lord Weidenfeld believes that this the right time to pay his ‘debt’ back. He has launched the Weidenfeld Safe Havens Fund, a project which has been paying for Syrian Christian refugees to be flown to Poland. Apart from paying for their rescue, he is also paying for a year’s worth of shelter and food to the desperate asylum seekers. In February this year, Daesh released a video showing the beheading of some 21 Coptic Christians at a beach in the restive country of Libya.

But while many are celebrating Lord Weidenfeld’s generosity, some Islamic groups have criticized the Safe Havens Fund because of its commitment to the rescue of Christians only, and not including Muslims.

But defending his decision to focus on the persecuted Christian community only, Lord Weidenfeld said “I cannot save the world, but there is a very specific possibility on the Christian side. Let others do what they like for the Muslims”. Lord Weidenfeld also added that his project will last between 12 and 18 months, during which time he hoped to have rescued the entire oppressed Christian population from Syria and Iraq.

According to the Occupy Democrats, Lord Weidenfeld actions are particularly powerful because the extremists of Daesh persecute and murder both Muslims and non-Muslims with a horrifying casualness.

And truly, there are countless reports of blue crosses tattooed on Christians, systematic extermination of the weak and the elderly, the seizure of all possessions and homes among other things being carried out by Daesh. The Kurdish Peshmerga forces liberating Sinjar province recently reported sighting multiple mass graves, one with as many of eighty women in it. Other groups that have also faced the horrors of Daesh include members of the Druze and Yazidi minorities, as well as Alawite and Shia Muslims.

Particularly in Syria, the country has become more than a war theatre. There is already a coalition led by the United States bombing Daesh targets. The US has even announced the deployment of Special Forces to carry out special raids in Daesh-controlled territories. Russia has also joined the train. President Assad and his small government are also doing their own thing, and with other rebel factions with different ideologies, the Syrian soil is really in its difficult days since God created it.

And in all this chaos, it is innocent civilians who are suffering the most. We recently published a story in which many refugees in Greece expressed their condolences to those killed in the Paris Attack, pleading with Western leaders not to turn their back against them because of Daesh.

Lord Weidenfeld generosity has therefore been widely praised. The United Nations Refugee Agency has also urged individuals, groups, and nations to emulate the example of Lord Weidenfeld by helping to save lives.
