A Brand of Revolution

When you hear the name Russell Brand, undoubtedly many different things comes to mind.  Some know him as an actor and some know him as a comedian.   Russell Brand is a man of many masks.  However, unless you follow him, you may not know him as “Russell Brand -The activist.”  Those who do follow Brand however, know that the actor/comedian is making waves with his statements and beliefs, that some call controversial.

Brand and his stance on government became the topic of headlines when he was interviewed in 2013 by Jeremy Paxman on the BBC’s hit Newsnight, after acquiring a role as guest editor of the New Statesmen’s revolution-themed issue.  What started as an engaging conversation/interview, quickly became a heated debate when Paxma asked Brand, “Why would anyone listen to a man who has never voted in his life?”  Anyone watching undoubtedly saw a shift in the conversation as Brand replied, “I don’t get my authority from this pre-existing paradigm, which is quite narrow and only serves a few people.  I look elsewhere for alternatives that might serve humanity.”

Within that 2013 interview, Brand called for revolution, stating, “If we can change things, why wouldn’t we?  Why is that naïve?  Why is that not my right, because I’m an actor?  I’ve taken the right.  I don’t need the right from you.  I don’t need the right from anybody.  I’m taking it.”  News of this call to action made headlines all over the world, and went viral on social media.

Following Brand’s book Revolution, Brand strikes again.  One of the topics of his new book that has garnered him a lot of criticism is his stance on the September 11th attacks.  When asked in a recent interview whether he believes the official story of the attacks, he says “What I think is interesting is the relationship that the Bin Laden family have had for a long time with the Bush family.  Do YOU trust the American government?”

Brand’s book Revolution has also been widely attacked due to the fury it has caused over Brand’s stance that it is pointless to vote, stating “I don’t vote as I believe democracy is a pointless spectacle where we choose between two indistinguishable political parties, neither of whom represent the people but the interest of powerful business elites that run the world.”

In response to Brand’s distaste for the democratic process of voting, Toni Pearce of the New Statesmen says  “If you don’t vote, you don’t matter.”  He goes on to say “If you don’t vote, the government will ignore your job, ignore your education and ignore your family.

Brand holds steadfast to his call to arms stating that “If we want to make a difference, then we have to be different.”  His hopes are that not only his stance but his book, brings a lot of issues to light that are often overlooked and ignored.  He feels that his status as a known actor can help bring this message to a much larger audience.

What do you think?  Do you agree with Russell Brand?  Do you agree that voting is pointless?  Do you agree that it’s time for a change and a revolution?  Let us know what you think in the comments.

  1. I agree with Russel brand statements. I live in a country where corruption and injustice is normal on a day to day basis. Create enough anger, create enough suffering, a revolution is inevitable.

  2. I agree with Russel Brand’s Statements. He has a point. I see governments like that everyday. They only serve the elite and that has to change.

  3. I agree. Who ever has the most money win’s. Who give’s them the money the business’s that want them in office. I say NO MORE! Take the power back. Stand up be different don’t be a bunch of sheep Voting for the Wolf or the Lion. War’s are big business, and I am not in that business!

  4. In a country like the UK, I do not believe a traditional revolution, as in Brands brand of revolution, is possible. I wish it was but I do not see that it is possible. We will only effect change through small incremental steps. If all of the disinterested, pissed off masses decided to vote for a party other than the pro-austerity neolibral 4, then maybe change could happen. Yes we do need a paradigm shift, but sitting around not voting is not the way to achieve it.

  5. I think he is absolutely spot on 🙂 Look forward to hearing more from Brand…and hopefully stir up more ideas of positive change and more people opening their eyes! Of course they will try to make him look crazy or call him an attention seeker?! I think he’s a great spokesperson for humanity… We need more people with a loud voice like Brand. We need Change now…and people need to start waking up and listening to what’s really going on?! The Rabbit Hole runs much deeper than we think….

  7. I agree with Russell Brand. Take for instance Ron Paul who was a great Presidential candidate that we did not even hear about on the last election. It is time for a revolution and I believe Russell has seen the bad side of the powers that be to know what’s up.

  8. i take issue with the statement “if you don’t vote you don’t matter”…. I say ” vote or don’t vote” it matters not. Though the ballot box is the last official bastion of voice by the people, when you have PACs, Super PACs and multinational corp using their dollars and influence, can anyone say any of the issues focus on the good of individual rights or coincidentally it trickles down to the little guy. I have come to believe…. The deck is most decidedly stacked against the individual

  9. i have held the belief of withholding the vote since before I heard Russell speak of it, as a woman I feel compelled to use my vote, history demonstrates the struggle of the feminine in the world. I feel Russell gets that, he gets IT…

    There are many awakening people, they do not find it in their hearts to become activists but apparently we just are. People who have woken up, have the understanding of fairness, harmony, compassion and realism, we do not understand, violence, hatred, anger and a need to launch missiles directly upon our own species…. WTF.?

    For me, money IS the root of all evil, we cannot vote if we have a mind because those in positions of power do not represent us. They have no clue, sorry but they do not.

    Wake up world, hold your vote if you feel no one is worth voting for… Why? Becuase power is in the right, not the wrong. Our world needs to change for all and the elite need to find their hearts.

  10. I don’t vote now,,see it as a pointless exercise. I am a libertarian by nature and see it as a trespass on my exercise of my free will.

  11. I’m a follower of Brand I agree with him and until the sheeple open their eyes and stand up for what is right and what they believe in nothing will ever change and that’s why we need a Revolution. He’s also right about the voting because if you look back throughout history all the positions held in office either at the State or Federal level have just been handed down to the next family member, it’s just pointless and a shame they already know who’s going to be in office before the voting begins

  12. i never vote as i don’t trust any of them, they all look after them selves, corrupt system, ‘they’ choose who gets in, not us voters. Imo.

  13. I wish more celebrities would wake up out of their complacent comatose and start making waves for the people. They have the money and resources to do it but so far Russell’s the only guy who’s grabbed the spotlight on this topic and issue.

    One thing’s for sure though; i feel a lot more hopeful after witnessing Russell’s ballsy arguments and hope that this wont die down as another internet trend and/or controversy.

  14. I agree with Russel almost 100 percent. Here in the UK we live under a total dictatorship under David Cameron who has NO INTEREST in the general population at all. But this world in general is screwed up by greed and corruption and the ones who suffer most are the poorest while those who are rich get even richer including the politicians. All over the world, the ordinary, everyday citizen is being robbed of earnings, robbed of savings (assuming one can save), facing increased cost of living, human rights being eroded and people are dying due to greedy politicians. And that is just the tip of the ice burg.

  16. I definitely agree with Russel, it’s time people finally start taking their power back, the power that has been taken from us! It’s time we raise our voices and let them know we don’t want their system anymore! We are sick of it! Everybody in this Planet is been supressed because of them and we are living the lives they want us to live, not the one we actually want! I literally say FUCK THEM and let the rEVOLution begin!

  17. I have voted in every election Municipal. provincial, and federal since I turned 18. I think that if you don’t vote you give up the right to complain about government. That being said, because we don’t have proportional representation here in Canada, my vote has NEVER been represented at any level of government.
    We have only an illusion of a democracy because whoever can afford to spend the most wins. We will only have a true democracy when the money is taken out of campaigns. All candidates should get an equal amount of cash and dedicated media time. No political contributions should be permitted EVER. This would result in government being elected for having the best platform and they would not be beholden to financial supporters only to the voters.

  18. Greetings John Rob, Russell Brand and the world,

    We are Anonymous.

    Someone has been bringing a lot of attention to themselves Mr. Brand, and it has attracted us as well as others who are distrustful of celebrities using their status as a launchpad for what seems at first glance, a noble endeavor. We would count Mr. Rob as part of this later demographic. Why are we so apprehensive?

    Mainstream entertainment has been under suspicion for obvious reasons for years. Most of us understand that we are being spoon-fed bullshit by the media. Why then, would we trust the ex-husband of Katy Perry? Because you are the ex, Russell?

    We don’t know what your intentions are, but coming across this open letter to you does invite you to defend yourself to someone else than a stuffed suit of the establishment. The article on Louder than War brings up some interesting points. So if you cannot fill in the gaps, please allow us to light the way regarding life as only we know it.

    Revolution is always awkward,, but should only be because it is fringing on what we believe to be death and chaos. Not because the person touting it is arguably nearly too aloof to comprehend the intricacies that would be involved. When you use the name and imagery of Che Guevara, you are immediately implanting the image of a bullet ridden struggle, to the ones who know their history, which is what he was apart of. We are not saying he was wrong, but the true revolution can be achieved without bullets or bloodshed. I would implore you to encourage people to learn the truth about men like Qaddafi and all that he had done for Libya instead. How the media made him seem like a crack pot because he refused to play the world economic ball game. Let us all make sure that our research is done and that the truth is discovered. It was Castro that stayed in Cuba and led the people to stabilization. But, then again, you won’t see as many Castro shirts in posh shops up and down London. Scaring people with the idea of civil war will not lead to the revolution we are seeking. It will only cause them to wall themselves inside their homes and hope to vote their way out of it and that is the antithesis of true progress.

    A very good point that you do proliferate is, “don’t vote”. You seem a little shaky though when questioned about this. Let Anonymous answer it for you, clearly and concisely. No one should vote because it does not matter. Voting gives the people an illusion of choice. Most of us know that voting results can and are being rigged regularly. The decisions are made regarding what passes and what fails when the bills are written, and when the candidates are first chosen. Voting is like a Roman event in the Colosseum to make the peasants believe that their society is just and fair as the lions rip apart the slave that got out of line. SOLUTION!!!! Don’t be apart of it. If there began a trend of .5% voter turn out, they would have to hire actors to make the story believable. Don’t participate and force them into a corner. Communicate with your community (see how those words are similar) and let people know that you didn’t vote, see if they feel the same. The secret ballot was created for a reason. The stigma behind discussing who you voted for is preposterous. As a community, people should have gathered together to discuss and plan and plot, but we were fed bull shit once again and let them label such discussion as taboo. We have a method to communicate with the world, let alone our immediate sector so let everyone know, “I DID NOT FUCKING VOTE”. See what the media does with the numbers. See how it will probably be common place bull shit showing the informed proof of the lie. That is the solution to that. When people realize that the media circus is pre-planned and pre-scripted regarding the fundamental facade of “Democracy” and start to share and tweet and facebook or whatever the devil the kids are doing these days, there will be an overwhelming consensus that it is faked and fucked.

    There is no such thing as “Democracy”, there is only capitalism. Capitalism thrives of off fear campaigns of scarcity. Scarcity caused by war, disease, over-population, global warming, etc. When a hibernating animal realizes that winter is coming, their first priority is to stock up on sustenance. Humans are not hibernating animals, so we have to have this forced vision of scarcity to feed our greed which is actually the self-preservation mechanism. Greed leads to crimes of every shape and size but is the improper term. We have been programmed to believe that hording and greed IS self-preservation.

    But wait, we should buy your book? Why, are there only a limited number of copies available, hence creating scarcity? Why not upload it to the piratebay and let everyone gander at it for free yourself? It will show up there eventually. Art has no price tag. Thoughts are art. Words are art. Give the profits to charity and redeem yourself perhaps. Sell that big house, rent a flat and give the money you save to the hungry. When the revolution does happen, your money will be useless anyway.

    Welcome to the DIY community. Punk helped to nurture this philosophy, something Mr. Rob knows a lot about. Community! That is what will change the world. From small to medium to large to a global scale, we are a community. In all fairness, from what Anonymous has seen, you Russell, do emphasize this to a degree. But it seems, that you always miss the part of the speech that would do the most good. It is a VASTLY unpopular idea. The community of human beings must let go of religious, racial, social, class, and sexual bigotry, to the point where yes, you will have to slap the Indian in the face to make him except his Pakistani brother and vice versa. You will have to slap the Jewish person to make him except his Muslim brother and vice versa. You willl have to slap Christians in the face to…, hell make them except anyone else and vice versa. And so on and so on. People must understand that this hatred is unfounded in nature and only a product of this modern society that they have been poisoned by. It’s a hard rain’s a gonna fall.

    There are no hipster badges here. That is why we are Anonymous. If you are going to wear the mask, keep it on. No fame, no glory, just information that will hopefully go somewhere. While we don’t have your looks, or charm, or celebrity (well maybe that one), we can reach more people, and do more good all the while remaining, Anonymous. No books to sell. No DVD’s. Everything we produce is free and always will be. We even pay off student loans for people we do not know when we can by fucking the system. Anonymous seeks no ultimate power, only to restore it to humanity. Again, that is why we are Anonymous. We have no leader, no true ideology even, other than ideas that just plainly make sense. You will not see Anonymous becoming mayor or governor or president. There is no need.

    And now we offer Mr. Rob a chance that Mr. Brand has yet to offer. A chance to question Anonymous regarding what, how and why this revolution will happen. At least the hive that makes up this post.

    Mr. Rob, if you would be so kind?

    • Your comment makes me want to puke! Since when did it become your DUTY to slap (FORCE) people in to believing something they do not want to believe in? Is that your idea of “FREEDOM”? FORCING AN INDIVIDUAL INTO ACCEPTING SOMETHING OR BELIEVING IN SOMETHING THAT THEY DO NOT IS WRONG. Just because YOU think you are right does not make it so! You are part of the problem, not the solution. You cannot force harmony. Harmony is achieved when people mind their own business and stop trying to force their will on others.

      NEVER tolerate anyone or any idea that DOES NOT TOLERATE YOU! I don’t care how much good intention you have, it is misguided when you do the same things as the opposition does to force your will. Wake up for realsies.

  19. I agree with majority of Russell’s view that the government do not represents the people interests and that they only serve the interest of the corporations. Yes we do need a peoples revolution, this can only happen if people unite with some sort of person leading the revolt. People ah loud also use there democratic use of voting for parties that really represents the people and the planter that we live on. It’s truly time for a change and a revolution is in calling.

    • The profits are going to various centres being set up for people with drug and mental health issues, he is getting nothing in his bank, he doesnt need it.

  20. ANON, you most of all, must expose this guy for the insane idiot he is (on a lighter note, would YOU give up Katy Perry? by abuse). Expose this jerk! Get him off the telly and back into whatever hole and never on the screen big or small again. I can welcome your commentary and question; however, I would not for one blink accept your acceptance of this fool

  21. totally agree with Brand, and believe he has played a massive role in leading us forward. The interview with Paxman was absolutely amazing! The man resigned soon after – coincidence? Rock on Russell you have inspired countless people to say no to a system that is beyond corruption. I myself am ready to take arms against those fuckers and their retilian crap. Recently, I encountered these beings and I am not scared infact their time is up. Hope we begin to get rid of the scum very soon. I am ready this side or in the next life wheen my wings are back. They will find a ‘hell’ of their own imagining. Kevin Annett is also a leading light, and I can’t wait to see the power structures tried and locked up for their crimes against the innocent. The ninth circle satanic cult want to be very fucking careful as I have lost all fear and feel like I could spend my days chopping the heads off snakes

  22. I agree with Brand to some extent. We do need a revolution in the UK. We need a balance of our society.We need to take back the powers from the Rich and Greedy that run this country. I understand the idea of not voting, because the choices are limited to one and the same in most of the main parties, which all seem to be in the pockets of the corporations. And how can a millionaires boys club represent the common people, when they have no idea how the majority of us live day to day.trying to make ends meet. Yet to not vote, helps them stay in power. We need a new political Party made up of honest People that have the majority of the people’s interest at Heart. A party that is represented By normal people that arn’t Millionaires, That don’t have seats or interests in corporations, That arn’t interested in lining there own pockets. We need to Re-Nationalize The energy industry, Public services,Communications, NHS and any other industry that serves the public. And o it in such a way that those at the top earn a slightly bigger percentage than those at the bottom.And the vast sums of Profits are either plowed back into the company or paid to the Government and country for the good of the People, not the few. We need to do this either by Voting for a new or existing party(not the main four) or a Revolution.

  23. I believe that all that the ducks are in a row for a revolution. Some of which are –
    1) Massive unemployment of the “intelligentsia”;
    2) Overt and over-the-top government corruption;
    3) Rampant police brutality;
    4) Governments sucking up to the elite and ignoring the demands of their majority constituency – the 99 per cent;
    5) Majority disillusionment with the political establishment, no matter what party;
    6) A growing class of students becoming indentured servants to the U.S. government via their college loans
    7) A youthful world citizenry which has inherited a world f’d up by their parents, where in “developed” nations the children are worse of than their parents or grandparents – where the American dream has truly become a fantasy and not something that can be achieved within their lifetimes.
    8)Popular media starts marketing Revolution as the most attractive, sexy option for political action, as opposed to supporting the corrupt political establishment. Stay-tuned for the revolution – I will be. riproarinrants.com

  24. I agree a lot of what he says is true and correct, but I have serious doubts over Russell’s true agenda. He claims to be from a poor background but that’s not true. That’s fine but why pretend you are? He “was” part of the elite celebrity control system. If he truly isn’t now, then why does he not admit to his

    In a video where he answered to comments claiming he was a Freemason, he brushed it off with a jokey response whilst taking time to answer other questions. To me it seemed like he was lying. That was my opinion, but check it out for yourself.

  25. I agree a lot of what he says is true and correct, but I have serious doubts over Russell’s true agenda. He claims to be from a poor background but that’s not true. That’s fine but why pretend you are? He certainly “was” part of the elite celebrity control system. If he truly isn’t now, then why does he not admit to the things he did, and expose the ways in which he was manipulated to do them. You can’t half change sides, it’s all or nothing.

    Take a look at this link and search the net for other dubious pictures and info on Russell’s previous actions.
    https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1378781_234347600058221_220291948_n.jpg

    This is why I suspect he is still being controlled. Just like the main stream news and other media, he’ll feed you some truths, gain your trust and then either throw in some bullshit propaganda, or convince you take take part in something like “his” revolution. Let’s assume a revolution was made, through peaceful marches. Elites plant aggressive revolutionaries in the mix that start a riot with the authorities such as police. Police fight back, including against innocents. Innocent protestors protect themselves and in the heat of the moment even fight back. In no time it becomes a full scale riot. Media propaganda paints the picture that the revolutionaries are not in fact peaceful, and that action must be taken to stop them. Maybe even including martial law if large scale enough. Elites win again.

    Every scenario is like a game of chess. They plant pawns in every camp. Some visible like Russell, some less so.

    Back to Russel in particular. In one of his trews videos where he answered to comments claiming he was a Freemason, he brushed it off with a jokey response, whilst taking the time to address other questions properly. To me it seemed like he was lying. That was my opinion, but check it out for yourself.
    http://youtu.be/TUvqa9HvUU4
    Does it matter if he was a Freemason? I don’t know? Does it matter if he doesn’t tell the truth? For someone claiming to present the whole truth, I’d say yes.

    What do you think?

  26. I have just read Revolution and found it amazing, I am fed up with the government system we have in place and the lack of empathy for ordinary working class people and the shear contempt for people with disabilities or mental health problems, All this government does is look after themselves, and the last government took us into an illegal war, they all refuse to listen to the people that they are supposed to be serving. Its all about corporations and bankers and MPs not about people

  27. What is it you all are agreeing with? Just the idea that something has to “change”? What exactly is the solution to the problem? THAT is the question. You all have seen what arbitrary “change” has done to the U.S. What exactly is Mr. Brand saying? Just what does Mr. Brand think should take the place of voting? Voting gives the people a voice. But it only counts when the people PAY ATTENTION to whom they are voting for in the first place. Mr. Brand doesn’t like to vote because he is to lazy to do it correctly. Is this what you agree with? The luxury of freedom does not come by sitting on the couch and eating chips.

  28. I am Canadian & I am amazed at the fact that Ron Paul is so overlooked & unheard of by almost everyone when he has ran for presidency a few times & has some of the best angles & solutions for the greater population yet he is highly censored. He is a great man & Russel Brand is sort of a new age George Carlin Love the information & truth being shared Love love love it!!!

  29. I agree with a lot of what Russell says but i too have my doubts about why he is saying it. As has been stated in other replies why sell a book on the subject? However watching his blog The Trews he completely rips into the main stream media in ways that are defo not in the best interests of his celebrity career. the thing is only time will tell if he is legitimate in what he says or if he has an alternative agenda. In the mean time he brings mainstream media coverage to topics which are largely ignored otherwise which cant be a bad thing. He is right about voting also especially in Northern Ireland where ppl only vote on the basis of what colour of flag a party supports their policies are irrelevant to the extent that most of the working class ppl actually vote for conservative elitist parties. I use to vote then i realised it doesnt matter when the choice makes no difference to the outcome.

  30. Rock on Russell Brand and 100%, kudos to you for actually saying so publicly what millions of educated and open minded, smart and aware people are thinking. Quite surprised you haven’t been found in a duffle bag somewhere though, after impossibly climbing into it and ‘getting stuck’ yet; as was arranged by the B.S/U.S government months ago (that even after the epic failure of a genocide thay was Vietnam, still start horrificly illegal wars and attempt to ‘fix’ countires that are not broken or asking for aid. America, if you really are humanitarian as you profess to be, stop sending your poor to die in aimless wars after brainwashing them in to believing that they are ‘heroes fighting for their country’ and pull your finger out and actually do some ‘humanitarian’ work like attempting to fix the worlds most screwed up continent of Africa, instead of possibly starting even more genocide by testing contagious viral weapons (ebola)!!

    Time for a change far beyond what political puppets like Barack promise. But when and how are the big questions that I demand answers for!? Too many people are stuck in the Matrix… Set your alarm clocks and WAKE UP PEOPLE, WAKE UP!

  31. I 100% agree with Russell and everything he discusses both in the trews and his book. He is speaking the truth openly and without shame. I’m glad someone is for once stepping out of line, not just obeying this quite obvious corrupt system and offering alternatives. It’s about time. I’ll follow him and anyone else who shares his views and I truly hope that within my lifetime the changes he is proposing do come about. More humanity and truth please!

  32. Revolution is coming. We are to destroy everything corrupt to save us all from being slaves to a world that doesn’t care. Revolution is coming. We are to eliminate the powers that be that abuses our rights and our humanity so that we can be saved from a world that never heard us or saw us shed our tears.

    REVOLUTION IS COMING. EXPECT US SOON. WE’RE READY, ARE YOU???

    Thank you, Russell Brand for speaking up for us against all this corruption. Namaste and Blessed Be.

    Kristina Serpentine of Post Traumatic Empathy And Kristina’s Asylum Diaries.

  33. I think what he is saying is true
    We need 2 stop the bankers and goverments
    Destroying our country’s. But be aware who russle is now dateing and who her parents and family is b4 u trust his every word ;((. Sad but true

  34. I agree with Russell Brand. Voting is useless, today. Voting today means to keep the same cycle going. I am surprised at how some people misinterpret what he means when he says he doesn’t vote and why.

    I believe voting today in this system, for this system, is useless because it is in fact, voting for the same system.
    Voting doesn’t mean anything for me today because I don’t want to play their game. We need to build an entire new system based on sustainability, nutrition, education, coexisting with nature flora and fauna, etc. I mean, what else do w really need. Nothing else! It is sickening how people live today. Build the entire system from a brand new foundation up.
    Do you realize that we could actually enjoy our lives to the max? Do and live everyday doing exactly what we want to do. It is not natural for a human to want to live the life we live now. Everyday we fight our instincts and and push away our dreams of happiness because it seems absurd to us to even DREAM of that life.

    Change the system.
    Then I’ll vote.

    PS: So, being part of this site (as I am new) means there are probably 100 hackers going through the useless shit in my computer right?
    Whether that is on fine print or not, I accept, because I believe in what you do.

  35. Brand states his perspective as one that voting doesn’t matter ONLY because the system or structure that voting is a facet of is so corrupt, change can no longer come from within. The corruption prevents meaning to the vote. Therefore voting in this system that is so corrupt doesn’t give you a voice anyways. If you vote for what you feel is the ‘lesser of two bad choices’ then you are not truly having your voice heard.

    Whether you agree with him or not, I think it is a pretty clear concept. He’s not arguing that voting as practice is meaningless, just meaningless in many of our current opportunities to vote, given the circumstances.
