The New York City Police Department has stopped harassing and arresting people for minor offenses as officers feel betrayed by Mayor Bill de Blasio, and fear for their safety.
NYPD protocol mandates that two cars respond to every call and trivial crime, even for some of the most minor offenses; the NYPD cops do not want to follow the dictate. Cops are turning a blind eye to minor crimes and making arrests only ‘when they have to’ since the execution-style assassination of police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on December 20.
The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association call the resistance a form of police protest against the ‘misguided and racist’ Mayor. Police said that safety concern is the main reason for the drop in police activity, but acknowledged that one of the reasons is protest against Mayor’s response to the non-indictment in the police chokehold death of Eric Garner. “This is not a slowdown for slowdown’s sake. Cops are concerned, after the reaction from City Hall on the Garner case, about de Blasio not backing them,” according to New York Post.
The Association warned officers to “put their safety first” and not make arrests “unless absolutely necessary”. Since that warning, drug arrests have dropped by 84% — from 382 to 63. Citations for traffic violations are down by 94% –from 10,069 to 587. Summonses for public consumption of alcohol and public urination are also down by 94% — from 4,831 to 300. Parking violations have plummeted 92% — from 14,699 to 1,241.
There is a visible decline in police activity and yet New York City is doing all right. Imagine how many dollars could be saved if NYPD lay off 94% of its cops?

If I did the bare minimum at my job I’d lose most of my hours. Then again if I murdered someone, even if I was “fearing for my life” I’d probably be arrested. Shameful double standards when it comes to police.

I beg to differ. more like the police officers should be sent to area’s that are their community. but say some area’s (ex: ghetto’s) don’t have many officers from the community. therefore, crime watch groups should erect from within the communities to assist officers, then be compensated for their efforts to the community with minor, yet substantial tax relief or some other compensation(NOT immunity to laws).
